President’s Message 12/25/15
December’s ski club meeting was fun, although a bit too long according to one attendee, and I think that the “Twelve Days of Christmas” sing-along is getting better. Last year we learned that some folks don’t know how the melody works and they were the ones assigned “…five golden rings..”. Next year we will do it again but I hope that we have more audience animation with the lyrics: for instance, they could flap their “wings” to “six geese a-laying” or jump around to “ten lords a-leaping”. You can’t sit on your hands and sing “eight maids a-milking”.
This month’s meeting is the annual “Soup and Chili Cook-off” that started back when we first started holding our meetings at the Red Cedar Lodge. When I first started with the ski club, there was a rope tow on the hill by the lodge and some of us probably got the first chance to try out their new Christmas presents on that hill. I was in 10th or 11th grade when I got my first new Northland skis with cable bindings and Molitor lace-up boots for Christmas. The first hill I skied on was the 14th Avenue hill in South Minneapolis and I remember that there was lots of deep snow and it was very difficult to stand up in, let alone ski on. Anyway, it doesn’t look like we will be doing much skiing on the Squaw Creek hill this year but who knows?
The doors will be open starting at 2 PM: so if there is snow, bring your skis, sleds, cardboard, or snow shoes otherwise bring a board game or a deck of cards. There are options as far as food is concerned; soup or chili, which are judged, or hors d'oeuvres, salads, breads, and desserts that are not judged. I think that the latter should be judged, too, because if you bring anything that ends in “tos”, as in Cheetos or Fritos, you automatically win a prize, and if you bring chocolate chip cookies you get a double prize.
The prize for best soup or chili has been hotly contested in years past and I suspect some of you are already perfecting your entry for the January competition. Me, I prefer chili to soup but I am not one for super spicy on the palate. A little heartburn or reddening of the face afterward is fine but don’t want to wash down every bite. If I have soup, I will usually select cream of anything or most soups with chicken in them. Here again, I like my soup hot but not spicy hot.
One thing to remember is “small portions”. Many times I will see empty crock pots when I finally get in the chow line because some hungry souls have filled their bowls on their first pass. If you are one of the first in line to sample the soups and chili’s, take a small portion so that others may get a sample.
Time is getting short, so dust off your crock pots and start concocting your next pièces de résistance to offer up to the ski club on January 16th. We have had some very good soups and chilis in past years and I suspect they will be even tastier this year.

Nothing Nights –Wed Eve
A long time tradition is to socialize on Wednesday nights, since there is nothing going on! We will meet for supper and drinks at 7:00pm and see what’s going on. Our venue will stay at CJ’s Bar and Grill, 62 17th Ave SW, in Czech Village.
We have been having great turnouts at CJ’s. The food and prices are good. Watch here each month for the location or check the East Iowa Ski Club website calendar.

Soup and Chili Cook-Off – Jan 16th
This is your chance to show off your culinary skills and win a prize for your efforts. Or just bring something to share.
The lodge will be open at 2 pm for early birds. If there is snow there will be opportunities for cross country skiing, snowshoeing, or sledding on the hill. If there is no snow maybe take a walk in the woods, or visit with friends around the fireplace.
Dinner will be at about 6pm.
The surveys for next year’s trips will be handed out, so be sure to think about where you want to ski next season.
We will provide the beer, wine, pop, condiments, and table ware.
This will be at Squaw Creek Park, Red Cedar Lodge just off HWY 13 and HWY 100 (south of Marion). Follow the East Iowa Ski Club signs once you get to the park.
Rescheduled Sundown Mountain Learn to Ski Day – Jan 17th

The unseasonably warm weather has delayed the opening day for Sundown this season.
We are rescheduling our Ski Day. Please note that this will make the price change from the original weekday price. Lift ticket only price is $38 or $64 for lift ticket, rental and lesson. We are not restricted in number so let’s bring it on everyone! This event is open to non-club members.
We will car pool from the Marion Walmart leaving there at 8:00 am, Sun Jan 17. Sundown lifts open @ 9 am. In the past some have met earlier at the nearby McDonald’s for breakfast.
Pick up your tickets in the North Lodge by 9:30AM (where the food service and bar are located).
We will need payment prior to skiing to get the group rates for you. Please contact us either by phone or email and let us know how many in your party as well as the ski package you will need. Make checks out to EISC.

Interlaken Switzerland and Prague Czech Republic Jan 22-Feb 4

In less than a month, 19 of us are headed to Europe for a skiing and sightseeing opportunity in Switzerland and Czech Republic. We start off with a week of skiing or sightseeing at Interlaken then head to Prague for 5 days. We fly from Cedar Rapids into Zurich and get bussed to Interlaken. Stay at the Oberland, a 3-star hotel for 7 nights lodging, breakfast and evening meals each day. Lift tickets are not included, I found a couple 1 day passes for $60-$70. At this time all taxes, fuel surcharges, and departure fees are included. We are flying United and there may be additional baggage fees. For the 5 day extension will be bused to Zurich and then fly to Prague staying at the Ametyst, a 4 star hotel for 5 night lodging including breakfast each day.
Interlaken is a famous ski resort town nestled beneath the mighty backdrop of the world famous Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau peaks. We’ll spend the week skiing on some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in Europe. Interlaken is known as the gateway town to the Jungfrau Ski Region, it lies 20 minutes from the valley stations of Grindelwald, Wengen and Mürren resort areas. Both train rides are ski bus available. Trains run about every 30 minutes. Bus runs once a day and stops at the City Overland. Ski at any one of the three resort areas. Ski lift tickets and rentals packages are available separately, or get a ski rental and lift tickets with free bus packages available. If these three areas are not enough skiing for you, there are other close major international resorts like Adelboden, Kandersteg and Andermatt.
Sightseeing of the local Interlaken area or take a day excursion via train or bus to areas such as Montreux for a day on the Swiss “Riviera”, Zermatt at the foot of the Matterhorn Mountain, Luezern a beloved shopping city, or Berne and Emmental valley. Take a train ride on a 100 year old mountain railway to the top of Europe “Jungfraujoch” for a highlight of your Swiss holiday. This highest railway station in Europe is located 11,333 feet above sea level, 4,000 feet above the top of the highest ski slope. The visitors gain access to a high-Alpine wonderland of ice, snow and rock, which they can admire from the viewing platforms on the Aletsch Glacier or in the Ice Palace.
After a week of skiing and sightseeing in Switzerland, it’s on the bus back to Zurich followed by a flight to Prague. Hotel Ametyst hotel is located near Wenceslas Square, the center of all things good and shopping, and close to OLD town. This 1,000 year old city has plenty of sights, buildings, restaurants, and museums to spend the week sightseeing. Tours available through hotel partners include Grand city tour of Prague, min-bus tour through picturesque West Bohemian countryside to the world-famous spa city of Karlovy Vary, or an evening cruise on the river Vltava with dinner and music.

Canyons/Park City/Deer Valley Utah Ski Trip February 20-27, 2016

We had a great December ski club meeting. The trip is full, all of the final payments are in and the Park City / Canyons / Deer Valley trip is ready to go. For those who made it to the meeting we rolled out the draft rooming list to our without a hitch – now if there are any problems, Kathy said she would take care of things while I am skiing.

We will be riding the LE BUS charter bus from the Salt Lake City airport to Park City for 30 passengers. We heard from most, but if you didn’t get back to us, we need the correct spelling and full names of the 20 flyers as soon as possible.
Gordon Bowman will be driving out and hauling skis for the club once again. The cost is $60 and you can drop your skis off at the Feb. 17th Nothing Nights at CJ’s in the Czech Village. Mark Balodis told me after the meeting that he is driving out and had room for some skis & boots at the same price.
Combining the Canyons into Park City did create the largest US resort with more than 7,300 acres, 17 Peaks, 14 Bowls, 41 lifts and more than 300 trails, but it can be confusing. We are encouraging everyone to try and familiarize yourself with the trail maps before we get to Utah. Besides the lifts and trails the maps give you the names and locations of the on mountain restaurants. There are free Mountain host tours on both sides of the Park City Mountain Resort that we encourage everyone to take to learn the best ways to get around the mountain. On the Canyons side the tour meets at the guest services building at mid-mountain, near the Red Pines Lodge at 10:30 until approximately 12:00. This area is served by the Red Pines Gondola and is a great place for the non-skiers to meet up with the skiers. On the Park City side the Mountain host tours meet daily at the Eagle Statue in the resort plaza at 10:00 and from the Summit Demo Center at the top of the mountain at 1:00. This is a 2 hour historic tour around the mountain emphasizing its rich mining and skiing history. The tours stay on mostly blue intermediate or advanced intermediate runs and the guides usually match the pace to fit the group. I find the morning tours work better as many of our members have a limited attention span and tend to lose focus after lunch.
We are only at Deer Valley for one day with our package (we can get additional lift tickets for a fee). Deer Valley is much smaller at 2026 acres over 7 mountains – 21 lifts, 101 runs with a summit at 9570 and 3000 ft. vertical drop. Deer Valley has Mountain Host tours meeting at the Carpenter Lift – Expert tour at 9:30 and the Intermediate tour at 10:00.
Here is a little more on the Lunch on Us promotion. For those who bought the lift ticket package (there are a few non-skiers and folks with Epic passes that were not included in this deal) we have a $15 per day lunch voucher to use at any of the Park City / Canyons restaurants. We have a 4 day lift ticket for the Park City / Canyons, so you can use a $15 lunch voucher each day. Some of your choices include - on the Canyons side: Red Pine Lodge – cafeteria style American food at he top of the Red Pines Gondola – large capacity / Lookout Cabin - off the mid-station of the Orange Bubble Express - table-served Rocky Mountain cuisine - incredible views of the Wasatch Range & offers a lunch menu and a full-service bar. / Cloud Nine at the top of the DreamCatcher and DreamScape lifts - focus will be healthy salads, soups, gourmet pizzas and sandwiches. / Sun Lodge above the base of Sun Peak Express - spacious mountain lodge features healthy, made-to-order salads, fresh soups, classic sandwiches and grill items. A great place to go that's often less busy than Red Pine Lodge with very similar food / Tombstone Grill at the base of Tombstone Lift - outdoor open-air grill features an authentic western barbeque. / Red Pine Waffle House & Grill at the top of the Red Pine Gondola - Outdoor dining with grab-n-go snacks.
On the Park City side: The Summit House at the top of Bonanza chairlift – cafeteria style -get a slice of pizza, famous bison chili or a fresh mixed salad. Summit House is accessible from 5 different chairlifts and at 9250’ you can bet that the views of the Uinta Mountain Range from our large, heated deck will make it hard to leave / Miner’s Camp at the base of the new Quicksilver Gondola & Silverlode lift - menu offers homemade soups and chili, fresh tossed artisan salads and Mediterranean kabobs and gyros. This brand new mountain Restaurant will have 500 indoor seats, large deck and state of the art food service. / Mid-Mountain Lodge near the base of Pioneer and McConkey’s lifts - featuring toasted gourmet sandwiches, homemade soups and the Mid-Mountain burger,.offering an espresso and snack bar for an early morning bite or late afternoon refuel - spectacular views on the expansive deck and the 10th Mountain outdoor grill serving hamburgers, brats, reubens and French fries. / The Shack - near 3 Kings Terrain Park and the Eagle Superpipe - Grab a hot dog or sausage and take in the scene outdoor deck! Park City is a small ski town that features 111 restaurants, 20 bars, 23 art galleries and museums. 64 of Park City's buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, many are located along the town's Main Street, and more than 1,200 miles of tunnels wind through the surrounding mountains, remnants of the mining era. The Silverado Lodge in the Canyons area is a short, free bus ride away from everything. Some of the other things to do include Winter Zip Tours, Guided Snowshoe Tours, Sleigh Rides, Dog Sledding, Cross Country Skiing, Snowmobile Tours and World Class Fly Fishing. All of these activities can be arranged at the Silverado Lodge.

EISC Roughriders Hockey Night– Saturday, March 12th

Join your fellow EISC members for a night at the Stable to cheer on our Cedar Rapids Roughriders. On Saturday, March 12th. The game is between Cedar Rapids Roughriders and Dubuque Fighting Saints. The seats are located in section C, which is in the Roughrider’s attack zone for periods 1 and 3. I have 30 seats reserved.
Ticket price is $14.
March 12th is Military Appreciation night at the Stable and the Roughriders are offering a $2 Two-Fer Concessions Special. This includes: 12 oz. Domestic Draft beers, 20 oz. Bottled Pop/Water, Hot Dogs, Popcorn-only $2 each.

This schedule is found on the ski club website calendar which provides a map. If we get a good snow day outside this schedule, use the ski club forums & set up a spontaneous ski/snowshoe day.
