Check out the online calendar to see the cool stuff happening around town AND of course all the club activities. There’s cycling (Solon here we come), music (Rock the Block), food, and kayaking (Takes to the River) options. If you can’t find something to do, just check out the website.

Sign up for the west trips will be at the Corn Roast again this year. You must have payment with you to reserve your spot. Sign up begins at 3:00. I’m looking forward to Winter Park in 2020!

See you on the trail, or in a lawn chair listening to music, or floating down the Maquoketa.

In the end, we only regret the chances we don’t take. So get out and enjoy yourselves!

EISC Annual Golf Outing

The golf outing literally started off with a bang as nine teams of members and guests 2019 08teed off on their first hole to the sounds of thunder and lightning in the distance, followed by a brief rainstorm. But soon the sun was shining again and the balls were flying in this eighteen hole four-person best shot at beautiful Wildcat Golf Course in Shellsburg.

2019 08At the end of the day after the scores were tallied, honors went to the team of Connie Miller, Matt Turnis, Tavis Garringer and Tyler Koch with a blazing 60. Second place went to Don Boland, Deb Shields, Ron Shields, and Bob Kerdus with a six under par 64, and the folks who enjoyed the most golf, and clearly had the most fun, were Kim Betts, Kathy Takes, Roger Van Zee and Chris Bowers.2019 08

Our flag event winners were: Men’s Longest Drive – Tyler Koch; Women’s Longest Drive – Dana Healy Nogelmeier; Closest to the Pin – Nancy Thorkildson; and Longest Putt – Don Boland.

After the event teams enjoyed a delicious lunch of burgers, brats, beans and cole slaw! But most of all, the group enjoyed a fun day of good weather, great fellowship, and fun golf! Plan to join us next year!

Katy Trail Fall Bike Ride – Herman, Missouri,September 5-7

Harbor Haus Hotel:                      $158 per person based on two people per room

Herman City Park Camping:       $99 per campsite

Cancellation Date:                        July 1st

You must be a current EISC member to go on this trip

Herman, Missouri is the destination for our fall, drive yourself, three night sight-seeing, touring, and bike ride trip.   Herman is a picture book village where 19thcentury brick buildings hug the sidewalk as they do in Germany.   It was voted Missouri’s most beautiful small town as well as being the birthplace of Missouri’s wine country.  So whether you enjoy biking, shopping, touring the wineries, or just sitting back and relaxing along the banks of the Missouri River, come join us for a long weekend and stay in either Historic Harbor Haus B & B, or hook up with your friends for camping.

The Katy Trail is just across the river from Herman, so it’s easy to get to.  And at 250 miles, it’s the longest “rails to trail” in the US extending from St Louis to Kansas City. You can bike one or two days or just tour all the wineries.  And of course there are many good dining establishments around the area to also enjoy. Hermann is an easy 4 Hour Drive directly south of Cedar Rapids mostly on four-lane highway.

There are just 10 hotel rooms and 9 campsites reserved. The last room at the bed-and-breakfast is taken. No more rooms but plenty of camping. You can reserve one of the 9 full hookup campsites. The park rules are one RV or two tents per campsite.

We will be visiting Stone Hill Winery on Saturday.  That night we will have a wine and cheese party (bring your own wine) at the Harbor Haus.

Sun Valley – Jan 25-Feb 1

Great News for the EISC Sun Valley trip!  We have two outstanding long time club member’s volunteer as Trip Co-Leaders – Sally Williams and Dave Brown are prepared to start selling the trip at the EISC Corn Roast on Aug. 24th.  We have some more good news – we were able to get flights into the Hailey Regional Airport, a short 20 minute ride to the Sun Valley Lodge in Ketchum.  Originally we were quoted to fly into Boise and had a longer bus ride.  This change lowers the cost of the trip!
sun valley

Sun Valley was developed as a railroad resort destination.  The resort skiers at the time were the European nobility, wealthy Americans and Hollywood stars.  The world’s first chairlift was introduced when it opened in 1936.  The EISC will be staying in the recently remodeled Sun Valley Lodge condos.  The Lodge Apartments were built to suit the ski lodge standard of Sun Valley's early years.   We are fortunate to be able to be staying in a lodge that is an important part of American skiing history.

Bright, sunny days with comfortable temperatures combined with long, wide-open groomed runs and awesome scenery are the reasons for Sun Valley’s appeal among the world’s skiing elite. Please don’t let the prestige mislead you—this is Idaho after all. Expect a low-key atmosphere with the highest standards of service and comfort. Famed ski-filmer Warren Miller began his early career in Sun Valley Idaho, camping out in a van in the parking lot by night and filming by day.

  sun valley

Known for the exceptional intermediate skiing, Sun Valley Resort has something for everyone.  Dollar Mountain has easier runs and a great place to get your ski legs back with its gentle, meandering groomers.  Bald Mountain has more challenging terrain, perfectly spaced glades and wide-open bowl skiing.  Sun Valley ski resort offers over 70 runs, a 3,400-foot vertical drop and more uphill capacity, per skier, than any other ski area.  This is going to be a very special trip!  Below is the new pricing and payments.  More information will be coming out soon.

Winter Park – Feb 23-Mar 1

Wow, it’s hard to believe that it’s August already and summer will be gone before we know it.  Sitting out in rural Iowawinter park while I type this months episode for Winter Park 2020 while on RAGBRAI one can’t be thinking about snow or cold this time of year but guess what?  We have to. Only 24 days till the BIG event for the Corn Roast and our big sale for trips.

This year our 2nd trip will head out to Winter Park, Colorado. We will leave Sunday, Feb. 23rd with 32 EISC members and be staying at the Zephyr Mountain Lodge for a week of winter fun filled activities.

winter parkGreat accommodations with 2 bedroom/2 bath condos in the Zephyr Mountain Lodge,  Winter Park’s only true ski in/ski out condominium lodge. The Zephyr Mountain Lodge is located just feet from the Zephyr Express lift. We will enjoy easy access to the ski shop and various après-ski locations. The Zephyr Mountain Lodge also includes four outdoor hot tubs, a fitness room, on-site Front Desk, interior hallways, and comfortable lobby areas. The Village restaurants, retail shops, and additional activities are within steps of these condominiums. Other amenities include heated underground parking (a small daily surcharge) and on-site storage for your skis, snowboard.

Some new highlights on the mountain is a new high-speed lift (Sunnyside) for the parks Mary Jane territory — Upgraded snowmaking and a vast amount of others, just to name a few.

People think Winter Park may be a small mountain town, but it’s been receiving some big accolades. Their latest achievement you ask? Being crowned the Best Ski Resort in North America by USA Today readers!

With groomers, glades, trees, steeps, bumps, powder stashes, what more do you want? Covering more than 3,000 acres of skiable terrain, 3,000 feet of vertical rise, and 7 distinct territories designed for every skill level, you’re sure to find any kind of trail you’re searching for.  With more than 315 inches of annual snowfall that’s a match made in skier heaven.

I am sure this trip will fill up fast so you will want to see me early at the EISC Corn Roast, Aug. 24th   to join me, your host Larry Smith.  This is going to be another great EISC ski trip adventure.
