February 2023 President's Message

Steve Cumming | Published on 2/1/2023

Greetings EISC members. It was great to see everyone at the Soup and Chili Cook-off meeting early in the month. There wasn’t as much snow as we would have preferred, but it was still the largest crowd we have seen all season.

The contest contained some fierce competition and the desserts and snacks were exceptional! Thanks to all who entered the contest and those who brought the desserts and snacks.

The meeting covered all the current status of the upcoming trips. The 2024 ski destinations were announced and caused much excitement. More details on the trips follow.

We passed out the EISC 2023/24 Trip surveys and had 40 entertaining responses returned. The totals were accumulated the results are with the board. They are doing a careful analysis with a report out next month. This was the first survey that included sections on the Adventure trips and it generated many new ideas. There were many creative possibilities for the week long, three day or one-day adventure trips. The number of ski trip choices is smaller and easier to manage. The bicycle trip ideas were still leading the way on the one and three-day Adventure trips. One of the highlights of the surveys was the number of members who signed up as possible trip leaders. Thank you to all who signed up as trip leader volunteers. It isn’t difficult and is usually a very satisfying experience. The board will be making choices on future trips from the data and will work matching up volunteers.

By the time this issue is published the Snowmass Aspen trip will be complete. I am still packing as I writing this message.

People ask about my favorite ski resort & it is usually the last place we have skied. The Snowmass Aspen area has always been one of my favorites. Snowmass is a huge mountain with a wide variety of skiing and a fun village. The Ambassador Ski Tour takes hours and can’t hit everything. I remember hiking up above Elk Camp, well above 11,300 ft. to get to Burnt Mountain Glades. The shuttles take you to Aspen, Aspen Highland and Buttermilk mountains. The Ambassador Tour of Aspen Mountain was a history lesson in mining and the birth of skiing. Aspen Highlands is a challenging mountain with incredible views of the Maroon Bells Mountain range. I am sure all 24 EISC members signed up are looking forward to this trip as much as I am.

We’ll get back after the article deadline, so look for the trip report in March.
The next member meeting is Friday, February 17th at the KC Hall. This is the meeting where we vote for board members to serve the next two years. Please be sure and vote either at the meeting or by absentee ballot. Look forward to seeing everyone.
