October President's Message

Steve Cummings | Published on 10/1/2026

Greetings East Iowa Ski Club members.  It was good to see and visit with everyone at the EISC Fall Kickoff meeting at Morgan Creek Park.  The pavilion is really nice but the rain kept our bike riding, hiking and exploring the trails and the park at a minimum.  There was a short meeting then everyone enjoyed a nice variety of food and desserts.  Some used the grill although the rain made it a challenge.  We want to thank the House and Clinics coordinator, Tim Gull for getting everything set up for the meeting.  I mentioned that Tim certainly looked dapper in his purple UNI Panther gear in a crowd of black and gold at the meeting.  We want to thank the Langhoffs’ for the grill and thanks to Dale Bohrer for bringing to the park.

I was a bit late to the meeting with relatives in from Tucson.  We really need to thank our club Webmaster, Kim Betts who filled in for Rosanne Van Cura and Janet Stimson who were on their way back to the US from their extended vacation in Rome.  We did enjoy seeing the pics of Rome and video of the Pope and his security detail.  Kim was tracking interest signup sheets the Amana Wine & Food Pairing night; the Fall Spain, Morocco, Portugal cruise and taking 1st payment money for the Spring bus trip to Charleston and Savannah.  Both of Adventure trips sound pretty amazing – especially after we saw all of the cool trip Facebook posts and heard the positive report on the Ireland / Scotland trip.  Thanks to Cathy Dick and Lori Huff for sharing some of the highlights and their obvious excitement from the trip.  We should thank Diane Scholl and Adventure Trip Coordinator, Rosanne Van Cura for setting this trip up.  Unfortunately, Diane got very sick right before the group left and was unable to go.  There is always organizational work for trips like this to come off so smoothly. The photo on the front cover of the Skiddoo is the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland.

The 2nd and final payment on Breckenridge ski trip was collected at the meeting.  LeeAnn Eddins and Kathy Takes have this trip nearly full except for a few spots.  Please sign up soon if you are interested.  Todd Eadie spoke on the Baraboo and Wausau Midwest Ski & Adventure trips.  Signups started at the Kickoff meeting and were managed by Lori Huff, who will be running the Adventure trip side of both trips.  Unfortunately, my skiing this season ran into a problem when I went in for a cortisone shot and was told it was time for a new knee – it is set for early Nov.  I am hoping I can recover as quickly as some of the other members in the club.

We talked about last camp/bike trip of the season at Cedar Falls / Waterloo the weekend Sept 26th hosted by Wendall and Jane Sents.  Unfortunately, it looks like it will be cancelled as a wash out due to flooding from the rains.  Rosanne has a Cedar Valley Nature Trail ride set on Oct 10 from Brandon to LaPorte City that should be fun.

Please watch for EISC Forum updates for fun club activities.  We are back at the KC Hall for our Halloween themed member meeting on October 17th.  I hope to see everyone at one of upcoming EISC events or meeting!
